Ocala Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Gopher prevention – How to Keep Gophers away from your yard?
Homeowners who have experienced the frustration of seeing gophers destroy their yards, gardens, or lawns can quickly get fed up. Many seek out solutions such as killer traps and poison pellets to take care of the problem, but there are plenty of environmentally conscious people out there seeking solutions that don’t necessarily harm the gophers or the environment. These are some effective non-lethal ways you can keep gophers off your property without killing the creatures that are simply looking for food.
Live traps
Many people choose to have professionals come in to install these traps, but you can do it yourself easily enough. Simply get a hold of the non-lethal traps at your local gardening supplier and follow the instructions that come with them. You can then simply carry the gophers away and release them where they won’t cause you any trouble.
Gopher mesh
This is a simple wire mesh that goes under natural grass and forms a physical barrier the gophers can’t get through. Regular chicken wire is often used, but it’s recommended you go for galvanized gopher mesh that’s designed to last a long time.
Gopher Baskets
These work great in places where gopher meshes aren’t feasible. These are mesh baskets or bowls that you plant what you want protected into. This works great for fruit trees, rose bushes, succulents, or even vegetable patches.
Peppermint Oil
Gophers are highly put off by the scent of peppermint, so you can use it to keep them off your lawns effectively. Simply dab some cotton balls in peppermint oil and place them into tunnel entrances you have identified.
Castor Oil
This is a popular non-lethal gopher repellent method across the U.S.A. and Europe. For those without pets or children, planting castor bean plants in your property will keep gophers away. If that isn’t the case for you, then simply placing castor beans or pouring castor oil in and around tunnel openings should be enough to discourage gophers from tunneling in your property.
